Assessments That Guide Instruction and Measure Growth

Before beginning tutoring, each student is pretested using the Wilson Assessment of Decoding and Encoding (WADE) and at least one norm-referenced reading assessment to document current reading abilities. Additional tests may be included if needed. These evaluations help identify your child’s reading strengths and areas for growth. The results provide a clear roadmap for personalized instruction and allow us to track measurable progress over time—ensuring your child builds both confidence and essential reading skills.

 Core Assessments

Wilson Assessment of Decoding and Encoding (WADE)

  •  Pinpoints your child’s phonics, word structure, and spelling abilities to place them accurately in the Wilson Reading System® and monitor their decoding and encoding growth.

Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST)

  • Evaluates critical phonological skills—such as blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds—that form the foundation for reading and spelling success.

Word Identification and Spelling Test (WIST)

  • A standardized assessment that identifies your child’s specific reading and spelling challenges, providing a clear starting point for personalized instruction.

For Advanced Students (Level 2)

Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests – Third Edition (WRMT–III)

  • A nationally normed assessment for students measuring word identification, word attack, fluency, and comprehension. Pre- and post-testing tracks growth across key reading skills, providing clear evidence of progress.

Progress Monitoring

Ongoing Assessment for Mastery and Growth

  • Every Wilson Reading System step ends with an End-of-Step Assessment to confirm mastery of skills. If extra support is needed, I reteach and reinforce before advancing.

  • Student progress is also monitored during every lesson. Each session is designed to be both diagnostic (identifying what the student needs right now) and prescriptive (targeting instruction to meet those needs). This ensures instruction is always responsive, individualized, and effective.

Why Assessment Matters
  • These tools enable me to pinpoint a student’s needs and design lessons that foster confidence and competence, while also providing families with a clear picture of their child’s progress. I reassess periodically to measure progress and adjust instruction as needed.
