Successful Steps Intervention

Helping Students Improve One Step at a Time Using the Wilson Reading System

What is the Wilson Reading System?

The Wilson Reading System is an intensive intervention program for students (grades 2-12) and adults with a language-based learning disability, such as dyslexia. It uses an explicit, systematic, and multisensory approach that builds skills cumulatively and consistently reinforces the application of current and previously learned skills. It is designed for those students who are not making sufficient progress in their current intervention programs or who may require more intensive instruction. It is used with students who have word-level deficits and have not mastered the decoding and spelling process.  The Wilson Reading System provides structured instruction in all five areas of reading

  • Phonemic awareness,

  • Word structure

  •  Phonics

  •  Fluency

  • Vocabulary

  • Plus spelling

In order to know if this research-based, structured literacy program is right for your child, please contact me for an initial consultation and evaluation.

Characteristics of Students who Benefit from this Program:

  • Difficulty reading words accurately or efficiently due to a phonological and/or orthographic deficit

  • Poor phonemic awareness and/or poor rapid automatic naming skills

  • Difficulty reading unfamiliar words and pseudo (nonsense words)

  • Guesses at words

  • Slow, labored reading

  • Poor spelling

  • Inability to read or write in English despite ability to speak and understand it

  • Unsuccessful progression with other reading programs

  • A language-based learning disability/ dyslexia

What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach?

The Wilson Reading System uses  Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) instruction which is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach and Reading Research.

Components of MSL Instruction

  • Phonology/ Phonological Awareness  (word awareness, syllable awareness, phonemic awareness)

  • Sound-Symbol Association/ Phonics

  • Syllable Instruction

  • Morphology (study of words and their parts)

  • Orthography (study of rules that govern the English language)

  • Syntax (understanding at the sentence level)

  • Semantics (meaning and comprehension)

Those trained in the principles of Orton-Gillingham also follow a set of principles when planning and executing a lesson. These principles uphold the integrity of the approach.  Orton-Gillingham is Systematic and Sequential, Multisensory, Prescriptive, Diagnostic, Explicit, and Flexible.

All About Me

I've been an educator for 20 years. I was an elementary classroom teacher for 14 years and currently teach privately both online and in-person.  During my time in the classroom, I discovered my passion for teaching reading and writing. However, I realized that there were children in the classroom whose needs were not being met, due to learning difficulties.  In order to search for an answer to help students that I could not reach, I went back to school to get my Masters in Education and become a reading specialist. During this time, I was introduced to the Wilson Reading System and was impressed with how effectively it helped students with dyslexia improve.  This later caused me to pursue further education and become a Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner. I'm so thankful to be able to teach reading and writing to students who need specialized and intensive instruction.
